Chapter 7
A few hours earlier Jesse shifted a bit uncomfortably on the hard floor of the cave and wished for a nice comfortable sofa, preferably in his childhood home with all the comforts of his childhood. He didnât want to live there permanently but at this minute he felt he could do with being fussed, and he knew his mother was good at that.
Soothing hurt limbs after he went running and rubbing his feet. She never got the concept of toughening her sons and told his father that he would have to face that all too soon when he got older. Anyway, that was a manâs task, she would say, and would he like her to ignore his pains when they needed soothing? Gregory Cooper would grin, sit down and say he needed a foot massage.
Which she would give him but only after he took a bath. In an emergency she might massage grubby feet, she told him, but this was no emergency and if she could massage her husbandâs feet she could definitely do the same to her son.
He smiled at the memory and wanted Helen to do that to him. Not his bad foot at the moment, of course, but his good one would be getting more usage until the fracture was healed.
How was she getting on? Was she safe? He shouldnât have let her go. Yes, they needed to get help but it was too dangerous and Jesse felt they wouldnât be any gentler with a woman than a man.
He looked round the cave in the dim light. Surely people must know about this place, even the rustlers unless they came from other places. He never saw it but then he was new to the area and didnât even know there was a path leading round the cliff. Mostly when he came in this direction it was dark because he didnât want to be seen.
But when he lay at the top of the cliff in the dark he never saw action of any kind below which he would see if the rustlers were working in that direction because they would have to have some kind of lights. He would hear them too because cattle werenât quiet. In fact, he didnât know how they would bring the cattle through without being spotted or heard.
Though probably not in the town but they must be aware that darkness did not stop sheriffs and bounty hunters from keeping an eye out. If they didnât realise it they were amateurs.
Which they were really because he managed to catch the three men and have them imprisoned. In their shoes he would never allow himself to be caught. He would be more on the alert and he would get his cattle away without being spotted. Maybe he should turn to crime rather than catching criminals.
His smile was crooked at the thought. That would have put Helen off him even more than him being a bounty hunter. But now, in essence, she was bounty hunting herself because she was involved in this dirty business.
